What is BOPET TTR Film?
BOPET stands for Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene Terephthalate — a type of polyester (PET) film that has been stretched in two directions (machine direction and transverse direction) to enhance its mechanical and thermal properties. When used as the base film for Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR), it serves as the substrate onto which ink/wax/resin coatings are applied for thermal printing.
Polyester film is the base material of choice for Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR). The thermal transfer printing applications are segmented into "standard TTR," Dye Diffusion Thermal Transfer (D2T2), and thermal stencil. For standard TTR, the main thickness is 4.5 microns.

Applications

Why 4.5 Microns?
The 4.5-micron gauge represents the industry sweet spot for standard TTR:

Thin enough to transfer heat quickly and efficiently from the print head to the ink layer
Strong enough to resist tearing during high-speed processing and printing
Dimensionally stable to prevent warping, shrinking, or stretching during coating and ribbon slitting

Certain applications use 5.7-micron film, and some specialty products are based on film thicknesses below 4.5 microns — but 4.5 µm is the dominant commercial standard.

Roll lengths available include 15,000; 16,300; 17,000; 18,500; 20,000; 24,000; 36,000; 40,000; 44,000; and up to 55,000 meters. Common widths include 1,200; 1,290; 1,350; 1,400; 1,500; and 1,560 mm. Longer rolls reduce the number of joints in downstream processing, which is critical for high-speed ribbon coating lines.
